One of the goals of this class is to cultivate life-long reading habits. Toward this end, we will read, as a class, a selection of novels. For each selection, students will be expected to complete the reading on time and to come to class prepared to discuss the reading.
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
I Am David by Anne Holm
The Trumpeter of Krakow by Eric P. Kelley
The Perious Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope
Ship of Fire by Michael Cadnum
Vocabulary DevelopmentStudents will expand their vocabularies by completing weekly vocabulary lessons and quizzes.
Students will prepare themselves for high school by mastering punctuation, recognizing sentences structure, and determining correct usage. Daily Oral Language exercises will help facilitate this goal.
Writing DevelopmentStudents will continue to develop as writers by writing a variety of written works such as responses to literature, reflective essays, descriptive writing, and poetry. Students will write a rough draft every two weeks and turn in a final draft every two weeks, alternately. Late rough drafts may not be proofed due to time constraints.
Listening and SpeakingStudents will practice informal presentations during the school year. Students are expected to be engaged in class discussions.
