Connecting to Network Servers

When connecting to network servers, you have the option of connecting using the AppleTalk protocol or the TCP/IP protocol.  Unfortuantely, the easier one to use is AppleTalk, which is generally slower and less reliable.  Following are instructions on connecting using TCP/IP.

TCP/IP connections using Mac OS 9.x:

Pull down the Apple menu and select Chooser.  You will see the following screen:

Now click on the button below the list of servers entitled "Server IP Address." In the resulting entry area, type in 10.0.1.1 if you want to connect to Server 85.  If you want Hostmanager, enter 10.0.7.4.  If you're connecting to the Elementary Server, use 10.0.1.4.  Then authenticate as usual.  Remember not to check the boxes next to the share points, simply highlight the share points you want and click on ok.  Checking the boxes will result in progressively longer startup times.

TCP/IP connections using Mac OS X:

From the finder menu,  pull down the "Go" menu and select "Connect to Server" then enter the ip address of the server you want to connect to in the "Connect to Server" window. Type in 10.0.1.1 if you want to connect to Server 85.  If you want Hostmanager, enter 10.0.7.4.  If you're connecting to the Elementary Server, use 10.0.1.4.  Then authenticate as usual.
